The visual arts in particular are important statement pieces; while created by humans, the work speaks for itself, engineered by a creator and presented with minimal comment. We’ve taken this inspiration to our own little slice of the arts and wrapped some of our most beloved reverb circuits in big, bold colors and linework, reminiscent of the German Bauhaus school’s early-1900s aesthetics. Part of its magic, and how it differs from the internal spring reverb found in most Fender-style amps, is that it is run *in front* of the amp, causing the reverb signal to distort and sound more intense. Because there were additional knobs on the outboard units, you also have more control over the reverb qualities. The Dwell knob controlled how hard the springs were getting hit by the guitar signal. The Tone knob allowed the treble to be dialed back to just the right degree of brightness. It was also essentially a tube preamp, so it would color the sound going into the amp. All this added up to a very distinctive reverb sound with a lot of attitude and complex non-linearities that are hard to replicate. But we here at Catalinbread did just that! Besides giving you the classic three knob control compliment of the original, we’ve also added a great discrete preamp that you can control via the Volume knob for a healthy amount of great clean boost when you want it

One singular thread winds within all human beings: the arts. We’ve combined a harmonically-rich “hole” reverb with an impossibly deep four-voice chorus that’s been outfitted with a feedback control and a gentle high-cut filter. Within this arrangement, the feedback control allows the Sinkhole to reach deep within the reverb to extract some truly otherworldly tunable modulation, featuring everything from comb filtering to pseudo-phaser to haunting auto-filtering. That aspect never gets out of control; it’s all wrapped up within the confines of the reverb. We’ve stretched the reverb trails out to their absolute limit, with the maximum decay time almost freezing your signal in space. Extreme settings evoke warm synthesizer pads, reminiscent of vintage analog-digital hybrids, holding your modulated note indefinitely. Combine all that with a full wet-dry blend and a warm preamp circuit, and you’re beginning to feel the gravity of the Sinkhole. With its roots in that patch, the Catalinbread Soft Focus is intended to be an instant shoegaze button, while addressing the most glaring issues of the original unit: no mix control, a sub-par preamp, and a ghastly tone-sucking bypass signal. At its heart, the Soft Focus is a heavily modified plate reverb with adjustable time, which is subsequently split into three paths. One path contains a multi-voiced chorus modulator, another features a well-appointed octave-up mixed in with the reverb, and the third path leaves the reverb untouched. The Mod knob controls the rate of the chorus on path one, and the Symphony knob controls the level of the octave on path two. All controls are "coupled" to the tone of the reverb to give users an expansive playing field of sounds to discover and fine tune. Our Soft Focus is not an exact recreation but was exhaustivelycompared with our own FX500; the difference is that a fairly generic fixed-time digital delay is present on the Soft Focus patch. We found that leaving this feature intact ate into the circuit’s memory just a little too much for such little payoff, so we leave that addition to you and your favorite delay.

One singular thread winds within all human beings: the arts. It was ubiquitous in the studio, and was the only reverb used on Pink Floyd’s iconic Dark Side of the Moon album for example. What made plate reverb so cool? It adds lush ambience, dimension, thickness, and depth in an unobtrusive way. When you listen to your favorite albums from the 70s you probably don’t even realize how much plate reverb you are hearing. Go back and listen and hone in on the reverb sound and you’ll probably be surprised how much reverb is actually there. In the studio the plate reverb signal was often processed on the way back to the console where the things like filtering and delays were applied.
